A village and popular holiday resort offering some great beaches, Heacham is located in the county of Norfolk, in between the resort of Hunstanton and the large town and port of King's Lynn. Heacham has a resident population of about 4,700 people and is perhaps best known for its association with the native Indian Pocahontas, who married John Rolfe, a tobacco merchant, who was born in Heacham. The area is furthermore well regarded for its fields of lavender, harvested here by Norfolk Lavender Ltd ever since they came to the area in the nineteen thirties.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village began to get known as a tourist resort in the mid-19th century, following the arrival of the railway line between Kings Lynn and Hunstanton at the start of the eighteen sixties. This also led to the Jubilee Bridge being erected in the eighteen eighties to replace the older wooden bridge. The village is still well loved these days as a tourist resort, with both South and North Beach being dotted with caravan sites.

The beaches at Heacham are placed upon the easterly shores of The Wash, meaning it is one of the few beaches in the east of England where the sun sets over the sea rather than over the land.

Heacham's Historical Background: It's quite likely more than five millenia since the initial settlements appeared in the area close to Heacham, the finding of Neolithic and Bronze Age artifacts, shows evidence of this. Habitation continued there thru the Iron Age and into the Roman period, however it was quite possibly not until the 5th century that the earliest true village was established there. The name "Heacham" is quite possibly derived from the name of a Lord in the twelfth century, Geoffrey de Hecham, although there is not any compelling evidence that this is a fact. One additional idea is, the name is derived from the local River Hitch.

Noted down in the Domesday Book (1086) to be part of the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham at this stage consisted of 143 households (making it quite sizeable for the period) and the manor was owned by William of Warenne. Up until the Norman Conquest (1066) the region was controlled by a couple of Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was subsequently under the control of a group of Cluniac Monks, right up until after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, at which time the Lord of the Manor was the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard).

The earliest surviving building in Heacham is the Parish Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, built in Norman style and was completed in 1230, one of its bells is in truth still older, dating from around eleven hundred, meaning it is one of the earliest bells still surviving in England. Heacham's village sign together with a tablet within the church remind visitors of the famous ties with Pocahontas, the indian princess who married John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in 1614. Pocahontas was only twenty two when she died 3 years later, but she left a son called Tom, who later on returned to America. The hall survived for many years but was destroyed by fire in the early 1940s.

In the early 1930's Norfolk Lavender Ltd was set up in Heacham with a partnership being arranged involving a local nurseryman called Linn Chilvers and local landowner Francis Dusgate, to develop the harvesting and distilling of lavender and related products. 4 years later there would be 100 acres under cultivation. Ever since these beginnings the company has grown greatly, and different varieties have been produced. The lavender is these days sold all throughout the world.
