This also led to the building of the Jubilee Bridge in the eighteen eighties replacing the ancient wood bridge. Historical Past of Heacham: It is in all probability around 5,000 yrs since the 1st human settlements materialized in the area surrounding Heacham, the uncovering of Bronze Age and Neolithic artefacts, gives evidence of this fact. Habitation continued in the area throughout the Iron Age and into the Roman period, although it was quite possibly not till the 5th century that the 1st proper village was founded there. The name is possibly derived from the name of a local Lord during the twelfth century, Geoffrey de Hecham, even though there isn't any compelling evidence that this is the truth. One more explanation it was named after the nearby River Hitch.

Noted in the 1086 Domesday Book as being within the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham at that stage had 143 households (quite substantial for this time) and the manor belonged to William of Warenne. Up until the Norman Conquest of 1066 the area was overseen by a couple of Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was subsequently under the control of Cluniac Monks, right until after the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, at which time the Lord of the Manor was the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard).

The oldest surviving structure in Heacham is the Saint Mary the Virgin Church, built in Norman style and dates from 1230, one of its bells is in fact still earlier, dating from approximately eleven hundred, one of the oldest bells still surviving in England. Heacham's village sign in addition to a tablet within the church record the famous ties with Pocahontas, the red indian princess who married John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in sixteen fourteen. Pocahontas was just 22 when she passed away three years later, still she provided John with a son, Tom, he subsequently returned to America. Heacham Hall endured for centuries but was destroyed by fire in the 1940s.

In nineteen thirty two Norfolk Lavender Ltd was founded in Heacham with a partnership being created involving nurseryman named Linn Chilvers and local landowner named Francis Dusgate, to develop the cultivating and processing of lavender and related merchandise. A few years later there would be a hundred acres covered in lavender plants. Ever since those early beginnings the enterprise has expanded significantly, and unique types have been bred. Lavender is these days exported all around the globe.
