A village and well loved vacation resort next to some great beaches, Heacham can be found in the county of Norfolk, in between the holiday resort of Hunstanton and the large town and port of King's Lynn. Heacham has a populace of roughly five thousand people and is probably most famous for its links with the Indian native Pocahontas, who married John Rolfe, a tobacco planter, who came from Heacham. Heacham is furthermore known for its fields of lavender, nurtured by the Norfolk Lavender Ltd ever since they arrived in the 1930s.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386Heacham began to get fashionable as a tourist resort in the nineteenth century, mainly because of the arrival of the railway line between Hunstanton and King's Lynn in the eighteen sixties. That culminated in the Jubilee Bridge being erected in 1887 in order to replace the olden wood bridge. The area is just as well-liked today as a beach resort, with both the South and North Beach being replete with caravan sites.

The beaches at this point are placed on the eastern shores of The Wash, therefore it is one of only a handful of beaches on the east coast of England where the sun sets over the sea as opposed to over the land.

The History of Heacham Norfolk: It's undoubtedly approximately 5 millenia since the first human settlements manifested in the area surrounding Heacham, the discovery of Neolithic and Bronze Age relics, shows evidence of this. Human settlement persisted in the area all through the Iron Age and into Roman times, however it was very likely not until the fifth century that the 1st real village was established there. The name is said to be taken from the title of a Lord of the Manor during the 1300s, called Geoffrey de Hecham, though there is no solid evidence that this is the truth. Another theory it was named after the local River Hitch.

Recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) to be within the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham at that point in time included 143 households (pretty sizeable for the period) and the manor was owned by William of Warenne. Before the Norman Conquest this area was ruled by a pair of Saxons, Alnoth and Toki of Walton. It was later controlled by a group of Cluniac Monks, right up until following the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, at which time the Lord of the Manor was the Duke of Norfolk.

The oldest existing building in Heacham is the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, built in Norman style and was completed in 1230, a bell in the tower is believe it or not still earlier, dating from roughly eleven hundred, meaning it is one of the earliest bells still existing in England. The village sign in addition to a tablet inside the church outline the historic ties with the indian princess, Pocahontas who wedded John Rolfe, of Heacham Hall, in Virginia in 1614. She was only twenty two when she died three years later, but she left a son, Tom, who subsequently returned to America. Heacham Hall endured for many years but was eventually destroyed by fire in the 1940s.

In nineteen thirty two Norfolk Lavender Ltd was founded in Heacham with a partnership being arranged involving local nurseryman Linn Chilvers and local landowner called Francis Dusgate, to develop the harvesting and processing of lavender and associated merchandise. By 1936 there was destined to be 100 acres being cultivated. Since then the business has grown appreciably, and unique varieties have been reared. The lavender is currently sold all throughout the world.

The village can be reached by way of the A149 and the B1454, it is around three miles from Hunstanton, 22 kilometres (fourteen miles) from Kings Lynn, 43 miles (69km) from Norwich and about 118 miles (190km) from London.
