St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386Heacham started to become popular as a coastal resort in the mid-19th century, as a consequence of establishing of the railway line between Hunstanton and King's Lynn in the 1860s. That also led to the Jubilee Bridge being constructed in the 1880's taking the place of an dated wood bridge. The village remains popular today as a coastal resort, with both South and North Beaches replete with caravan and camping parks.

Heacham's Historical Background: It's in all likelihood roughly 5 millenia since the 1st settlements appeared in the area near Heacham, and the discovery of Bronze Age and Neolithic artifacts, show evidence of this fact. Habitation remained in the area all through the Iron Age and into the times of the Romans, even though it was perhaps not till the 5th century that the 1st genuine village was set up there. The name "Heacham" is quite possibly taken from the name of a local Norman Lord during the 1300s, called Geoffrey de Hecham, however there isn't any strong evidence that this is a fact. A different explanation is, the name comes from the local River Hitch.

Noted down in the Domesday Book (1086) as being in the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, the village at that moment comprised one hundred and forty three households (making it quite large for the times) and the manor was controlled by William of Warenne. Up until the Norman Conquest the village was overseen by two Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was then governed by Cluniac Monks, right until after the Henry the Eighth's Dissolution of the Monasteries, when the Lord of the Manor was the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard).

The eldest surviving structure in the village is the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, built in Norman style and was built in 1230, a bell in the tower is actually even earlier than the church itself, dating from approximately 1100, making it one of the most ancient bells still surviving in England. Heacham's village sign in addition to a tablet inside the church outline the historic ties with the red indian princess, Pocahontas who wedded John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in sixteen fourteen. She was just twenty two when she passed away 3 years later, however she gave birth to a son, Tom, he subsequently returned to America. Heacham Hall endured for many years but was finally destroyed by fire in the early 1940s.

In the early 1930's Norfolk Lavender Ltd was set up in Heacham with a partnership being created involving nurseryman called Linn Chilvers and local landowner Francis Dusgate, to develop the harvesting and processing of lavender and related products. By 1936 there were 100 acres under cultivation. Since then the company has expanded enormously, and unique varieties have been produced. Lavender is today exported all around the globe.
