A seaside village and popular vacation resort having some fine beaches, Heacham is situated in the county of Norfolk, between the holiday resort of Hunstanton ("Hunny") and the port and town of King's Lynn. Heacham has a resident population of roughly four thousand seven hundred occupants and is possibly most commonly known for its association with the Indian Pocahontas, who married a tobacco planter called John Rolfe, who came from Heacham. The area is also well known for its fields of lavender, harvested by Norfolk Lavender Ltd ever since they came to Heacham in the nineteen thirties.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village began to be popular as a coastal resort in the mid-19th century, because of the establishing of the rail line between Hunstanton and King's Lynn in the 1860s. That also led to the building of the Jubilee Bridge in the eighteen eighties taking the place of the older timber bridge. The area is just as well loved nowadays as a seaside resort, with both the North Beach and South Beach dotted with caravan and camping parks.

The shorelines at Heacham are situated on the easterly shores of The Wash, as a consequence it is one of few beaches in the east of England where sunsets can be seen over the sea rather than over the land.

Heacham's Historical Background: It's in all probability roughly 5 millenia since the first human settlements occurred in the region near Heacham, the unearthing of Bronze Age and Neolithic artefacts, gives evidence of this fact. Human settlement persisted there all through the Iron Age and into the Roman period, even though it was possibly not till the 5th century when the first true village was set up there. The name of the village is possibly derived from the title of a local Lord of the Manor during the twelfth century, called Geoffrey de Hecham, even though there is no compelling evidence that this is true. An additional possibility it was named after the local River Hitch.

Recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 to be part of the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham at that time comprised one hundred and forty three households (fairly big for this time) and the manor was owned by William of Warenne. At the time of the 1066 Norman Conquest Heacham was ruled by 2 Saxons, Alnoth and Toki of Walton. It was thereafter governed by a group of Cluniac Monks, right up until following the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, at which time the Lord of the Manor was the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard).

The eldest surviving building in the village is the St Mary the Virgin Church, built in Norman style and was completed in twelve thirty, a bell in the tower is in fact even older, dating from around eleven hundred, one of the earliest bells still surviving in England. The village sign in addition to a tablet inside the church remind the villagers of the famous ties with the red indian, Pocahontas who wedded John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in 1614. Pocahontas was just twenty two when she died three years later, still she provided John with a son called Tom, who subsequently returned to America. The hall endured for centuries but was eventually destroyed by fire in 1941.

In 1932 Norfolk Lavender Ltd was set up in Heacham with a partnership being created between local nurseryman called Linn Chilvers and local landowner called Francis Dusgate, for the purpose of harvesting and processing of lavender and associated merchandise. A few years later there was destined to be a hundred acres being cultivated. Ever since those early beginnings the enterprise has evolved enormously, and unique types have been nurtured. Lavender is currently sold all around the world.

The village can be accessed via the the A149 or the B1454, it is roughly 5km (three miles) from Hunstanton, 22km (14 miles) from Kings Lynn, 43 miles (69 kilometres) from Norwich and about 190 kilometres (118 miles) from London.
