A village and well loved holiday resort next to some exceptional beaches, Heacham is set in the county of Norfolk, between the town of Hunstanton and the town and port of Kings Lynn. Heacham has a resident population of roughly five thousand people and is perhaps most recognized for its connection with the Indian native Pocahontas, who wedded John Rolfe, a tobacco merchant, who came from Heacham. The area is also known for its fields of lavender, farmed here by Norfolk Lavender Ltd since they arrived in nineteen thirty two.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village began to become fashionable as a beach resort in the 19th century, a result of the coming of the railway line between King's Lynn and Hunstanton in the early eighteen sixties. This also led to the erection of the Jubilee Bridge in the eighteen eighties in order to replace an older wooden bridge. Heacham remains well loved today as a tourist resort, with both the North and South Beach being dotted with caravan and camping sites.

The shorelines at this point are positioned upon the eastern shores of The Wash, consequently it is one of few beaches on the east coast of England where sunsets are visible over the sea instead of over the land.

A History of Heacham: It's perhaps around five millenia since the 1st human settlements materialized in the area surrounding Heacham, and the unearthing of Bronze Age and Neolithic relics, shows evidence of this. Habitation remained in the area all through the Iron Age and into the Roman era, whilst it was quite likely not until the fifth century that the first genuine village was set up there. The name of the village is said to be taken from the name of a local Lord of the Manor during the 1300s, called Geoffrey de Hecham, however there isn't any strong evidence of this. A different thought is, the name is taken from the local River Hitch.

Registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as being in the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham at this stage had 143 households (rather substantial for the time) and the manor was owned by William of Warenne. Up until the 1066 Norman Conquest the region was overseen by a pair of Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was afterwards under the control of Cluniac Monks, until after the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, at which time the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard) became Lord of the Manor.

The earliest existing structure in the village is the Parish Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, which is built in Norman style and is dated twelve thirty, one of its bells is in truth still earlier than this, dating from roughly eleven hundred, making it one of the most ancient bells still existing in England. The village sign as well as a tablet in the church tell of the famous links with Pocahontas, the indian princess who married John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in sixteen fourteen. She was just twenty two when she died 3 years later, but she left a son, Tom, who subsequently returned to America. The hall survived for many years but was destroyed by fire in 1941.

In the early 1930's Norfolk Lavender Ltd was set up in Heacham with a partnership being created between a local nurseryman named Linn Chilvers and local landowner Francis Dusgate, to develop the producing and processing of lavender and associated products. By 1936 there were one hundred acres under cultivation. Ever since then the enterprise has grown considerably, and newer varieties have been raised. Lavender is today sold all over the world.

The village can be reached from the the A149 or the B1454, it is around 3 miles (5 kilometres) from Hunstanton, 22km (14 miles) from King's Lynn, 43 miles (69km) from Norwich and about 118 miles from London.
