A village and well loved holiday resort next to some great beaches, Heacham is positioned in Norfolk, East Anglia, in between the holiday resort of Hunstanton ("Hunny") and the large port and town of King's Lynn. The village has a resident population of around 5,000 inhabitants and is probably best known for its historic associations with the Indian Pocahontas, who married John Rolfe, a tobacco grower, who originated in Heacham. The area is also widely known for its lavender fields, grown here by the Norfolk Lavender Ltd since they arrived in the 1930s.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village started to be popular as a seaside resort in the 19th century, after the arrival of the railway line between Hunstanton and Kings Lynn at the start of the eighteen sixties. This resulted in the building of the Jubilee Bridge in the 1880's to take the place of an olden wooden bridge. The village continues to be well loved nowadays as a tourist resort, with both North and South Beaches being peppered with caravan and camping sites.

The shorelines here are placed on the east shoreline of The Wash, consequently it's one of very few beaches on the east coast of England where sunsets are visible over the sea rather than over the land.

Heacham's Historic Past: It is probably approximately 5 millenia since the earliest human settlements appeared in the vicinity surrounding Heacham, the finding of Bronze Age and Neolithic relics, gives evidence of this fact. Human settlement remained in the area all through the Iron Age and into the times of the Romans, even though it was quite likely not till the 5th century that the first true village was established there. The name is possibly taken from the name of a Lord of the Manor during the 1300s, called Geoffrey de Hecham, though there is no compelling evidence that this is the truth. A further theory is, the name comes from the local River Hitch.

Listed in the Domesday Book as being included in the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham during those times consisted of 143 households (making it fairly substantial for this period) and the manor was owned by William of Warenne. At the time of the Norman Conquest (1066) the region was ruled by a pair of Saxons, Alnoth and Toki of Walton. It was subsequently under the control of Cluniac Monks, until after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, at which time the Duke of Norfolk became Lord of the Manor.

The oldest existing building in the village is the Church of St Mary the Virgin, built in the Norman style and was completed in twelve thirty, one of its bells is believe it or not still earlier than this, dating from roughly eleven hundred, meaning it is one of the earliest bells still surviving in England. Heacham's village sign in addition to a tablet within the church record the historic links with the red indian princess, Pocahontas who married John Rolfe, of Heacham Hall, in Virginia in sixteen fourteen. She was just twenty two when she passed away 3 years later, still she produced a son, Tom, he subsequently went back to America. Heacham Hall survived for many years but was destroyed by fire in the 1940s.

In nineteen thirty two Norfolk Lavender Ltd was established in Heacham with a partnership being arranged involving a local nurseryman Linn Chilvers and a landowner Francis Dusgate, with the objective of harvesting and processing of lavender and related merchandise. By 1936 there would be over 100 acres being cultivated. Ever since these beginnings the venture has grown appreciably, and brand new varieties have been nurtured. The lavender is nowadays exported all around the world.

Heacham can be entered by means of the A149 or the B1454, it is roughly three miles from Hunstanton, fourteen miles from King's Lynn, 43 miles from Norwich and about 190 kilometres (118 miles) from London.
