A village and popular vacation resort boasting some wonderful beaches, Heacham is situated in the county of Norfolk, in between the town of Hunstanton ("Hunny") and the port and town of King's Lynn. The village has a population of about 4,700 occupants and is probably most famous for its historic links with the Indian native Pocahontas, who wedded a tobacco grower called John Rolfe, who was born in Heacham. Heacham is furthermore well regarded for its lavender fields, nurtured here by Norfolk Lavender Ltd ever since they came to the area in 1932.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386Heacham began to be popular as a sea side resort in in the mid-nineteenth century, after the opening of the rail line between Hunstanton and Kings Lynn in the early eighteen sixties. That culminated in the building of the Jubilee Bridge in 1887 replacing an outmoded wooden bridge. The village continues to be popular nowadays as a seaside resort, with both the North and South Beaches being dotted with caravan parks.

The shorelines in this area are placed upon the easterly coast of The Wash, as a consequence it is one of the rare beaches on the east coast of England where the sun sets over the sea and not over the land.

Heacham's Historical Past: It is likely roughly five thousand years since the earliest settlements took place in the region surrounding Heacham, and the discovery of Bronze Age and Neolithic artefacts, show evidence of this. Habitation persisted there through the Iron Age and into Roman times, whilst it was most probably not until the fifth century that the earliest actual village was established there. The name of the village is said to be derived from the title of a Lord of the Manor during the 12th century, called Geoffrey de Hecham, although there is not any reliable evidence of this. An additional explanation is that the name derives from the close by River Hitch.

Reported in the Domesday Book of 1086 to be part of the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham during that time comprised 143 households (fairly large for the time) and the manor was owned by William of Warenne. Prior to the 1066 Norman Conquest the region was ruled by 2 Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was afterwards under the control of Cluniac Monks, until following the Henry the Eighth's Dissolution of the Monasteries, at which time the Lord of the Manor was the Duke of Norfolk.

The most ancient surviving structure in the village is the St Mary the Virgin Parish Church, which is built in Norman style and dates from twelve thirty, one of its bells is in truth even older than the church itself, dating from about eleven hundred, one of the earliest bells still existing in England. Heacham's village sign plus a tablet inside the church remind visitors of the famous links with Pocahontas, the red indian who married John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in 1614. She was only 22 when she passed away 3 years later, but she provided John with a son, Tom, he eventually went back to America. Heacham Hall endured for many years but was destroyed by fire in 1941.

In 1932 Norfolk Lavender Ltd was set up in the village with a partnership being created involving a local nurseryman named Linn Chilvers and local landowner Francis Dusgate, to develop the producing and processing of lavender and related products. Four years later there were a hundred acres being cultivated. Ever since then the enterprise has grown significantly, and fresh varieties have been propagated. Lavender is today exported all over the world.

The village can be accessed from the the A149 and the B1454, it is about three miles from Hunstanton, fourteen miles (22km) from Kings Lynn, 69km (43 miles) from Norwich and about 118 miles from London.
