A village and well loved vacation destination having some excellent beaches, Heacham is found in Norfolk, East Anglia, in between the holiday resort of Hunstanton and the port and town of King's Lynn. Heacham has a population of roughly 4,700 occupants and is possibly best known for its historic connections with the Indian native Pocahontas, who married a tobacco planter called John Rolfe, who came from Heacham. The village is also well known for its fields of lavender, harvested by Norfolk Lavender Ltd ever since they came to Heacham in the 1930s.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village started to become popular as a tourist resort in the nineteenth century, a result of the establishing of the railway line between King's Lynn and Hunstanton at the beginning of the eighteen sixties. That resulted in the construction of the Jubilee Bridge in 1887 to replace an ancient timber bridge. Heacham is still well loved nowadays as a beach resort, with both South and North Beach being peppered with caravan and camping parks.

The shorelines at this point are situated on the east shoreline of The Wash, this means it's one of the few beaches on the east coast of England where the sun sets over the sea rather than over the land.

The Historical Past of Heacham: It's more than likely roughly five millenia since the 1st settlers emerged in the area surrounding Heacham, the uncovering of Neolithic and Bronze Age artifacts, gives evidence of that. Human settlement continued there throughout the Iron Age and into Roman times, however it was quite possibly not till the 5th century when the first genuine village was founded there. The name is said to be derived from the name of a Lord in the twelfth century, Geoffrey de Hecham, although there is not any compelling evidence of this. Still another idea it was named after the close by River Hitch.

Noted in the Domesday Book (1086) to be within the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, the village at that stage supported 143 households (rather substantial for the period) and the manor belonged to William of Warenne. Before the Norman Conquest (1066) this area was overseen by 2 Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was subsequently governed by Cluniac Monks, right until after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, when the Lord of the Manor was the Duke of Norfolk.

The most ancient remaining building in the village is the Saint Mary the Virgin Parish Church, which is built in Norman style and was built in 1230, one of its bells is believe it or not still older than the church itself, dating from around 1100, meaning it is one of the oldest bells still existing in England. Heacham's village sign plus a tablet inside the church recount the famous ties with the red indian, Pocahontas who married John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in 1614. Pocahontas (Rebecca) was just 22 when she died three years later, nevertheless she left behind a son named Tom, he eventually returned to America. Heacham Hall survived for centuries but was destroyed by fire in the 1940s.

In 1932 Norfolk Lavender Ltd was set up in the village with a partnership being arranged between nurseryman called Linn Chilvers and local landowner Francis Dusgate, to develop the growing and processing of lavender and associated merchandise. Four years later there would be over a hundred acres under cultivation. Ever since these beginnings the company has evolved dramatically, and new varieties have been produced. Lavender is nowadays exported all throughout the world.

The village can be reached via the the A149 or the B1454, it is about 5km (3 miles) from Hunstanton, 22km (14 miles) from King's Lynn, 43 miles from Norwich and about 118 miles from London.
