St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386Heacham started to become known as a tourist resort in the nineteenth century, a result of the establishing of the railway line between Hunstanton and King's Lynn in the early 1860s. This resulted in the Jubilee Bridge being constructed in eighteen eighty seven taking the place of an older timber bridge. The village still is well-liked nowadays as a seaside resort, with both the North and South Beaches being replete with caravan parks.

The beach areas here are set upon the eastern banks of The Wash, this means it is one of few beaches in the east of England where sunsets are visible over the sea rather than over the land.

Heacham's History: It's in all likelihood around 5 millenia since the 1st human settlements occurred in the vicinity near Heacham, and the unearthing of Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts, show evidence of that. Settlement remained there thru the Iron Age and into the Roman period, whilst it was quite likely not until the fifth century when the first proper village was founded there. The name is possibly taken from the name of a Lord of the Manor during the twelfth century, Geoffrey de Hecham, however there isn't any solid evidence that this is a fact. Still another idea it was named after the nearby River Hitch.

Recognized in the 1086 Domesday Book to be within the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham at that point in time had one hundred and forty three households (making it rather large for this time) and the head of the manor was William of Warenne. Up until the Norman Conquest the region was ruled by a pair of Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was then under the control of a group of Cluniac Monks, until following the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, when the Lord of the Manor was the Duke of Norfolk.

The most ancient surviving structure in Heacham is the Saint Mary the Virgin Church, which is built in the Norman style and was completed in 1230, a bell in the tower is in fact even older than the church itself, dating from approximately eleven hundred, one of the earliest bells still surviving in England. Heacham's village sign along with a tablet in the church tell of the historic ties with Pocahontas, the indian princess who wedded John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in 1614. Pocahontas was only 22 when she passed away 3 years later, nonetheless she left behind a son, Tom, who subsequently returned to America. Heacham Hall endured for centuries but was ultimately destroyed by fire in the early 1940s.

In nineteen thirty two Norfolk Lavender Ltd was set up in the village with a partnership being set up between local nurseryman Linn Chilvers and a landowner called Francis Dusgate, for the purpose of growing and processing of lavender and associated merchandise. By 1936 there were one hundred acres under cultivation. Since these beginnings the business has grown substantially, and different varieties have been produced. Lavender is these days exported all around the world.
