A village and well loved vacation resort beside some outstanding beaches, Heacham can be found in the county of Norfolk, in between the town of Hunstanton and the town and port of Kings Lynn. Heacham has a resident population of roughly 4,700 inhabitants and is perhaps best known for its historic links with the native Indian Pocahontas, who wedded a tobacco planter called John Rolfe, who originated in Heacham. The area is also widely known for its lavender fields, grown by the Norfolk Lavender Ltd since they arrived in the nineteen thirties.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village started to be known as a sea side resort in Victorian times, mainly because of the establishing of the train line between King's Lynn and Hunstanton in the early 1860s. That culminated in the Jubilee Bridge being constructed in the 1880's taking the place of the dated wooden bridge. The village is just as popular these days as a seaside resort, with both South Beach and North Beach lined with camping and caravan sites.

The beaches at this point are placed on the eastern banks of The Wash, this means it's one of the only beaches in eastern England where the sun sets over the sea instead of over the land.

Historical Background of Heacham: It is probably around five thousand years since the earliest settlers arrived in the region surrounding Heacham, and the discovery of Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts, gives evidence of this. Human settlement remained in the area throughout the Iron Age and into the times of the Romans, though it was very likely not till the 5th century that the 1st actual village was established there. The name is said to be derived from the title of a Lord of the Manor during the 12th century, called Geoffrey de Hecham, even though there isn't any firm evidence that this is the truth. An extra thought is that the name is taken from the nearby River Hitch.

Registered in the Domesday Book (1086) as being included in the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham back then comprised 143 households (making it quite substantial for this time) and the head of the manor was William of Warenne. At the time of the 1066 Norman Conquest Heacham was overseen by a pair of Saxons, Alnoth and Toki of Walton. It was then controlled by a group of Cluniac Monks, right until after the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, at which time the Lord of the Manor was the Duke of Norfolk.

The earliest existing building in Heacham is the Parish Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, built in the Norman style and was completed in 1230, a bell in the tower is believe it or not even older, dating from roughly 1100, one of the oldest bells still surviving in England. Heacham's village sign and a tablet in the church recount the historic links with Pocahontas, the red indian who married John Rolfe, of Heacham Hall, in Virginia in 1614. Pocahontas (Rebecca) was just twenty two when she passed away three years later, nevertheless she produced a son, Tom, he eventually went back to America. The hall endured for centuries but was eventually destroyed by fire in the early 1940s.

In the early 1930's Norfolk Lavender Ltd was founded in Heacham with a partnership being created between nurseryman Linn Chilvers and a landowner Francis Dusgate, to develop the growing and processing of lavender and associated merchandise. In 1936 there were one hundred acres being cultivated. Ever since those early days the business has expanded significantly, and different types have been created. Lavender is nowadays exported all over the world.

Heacham can be entered by means of the A149 or the B1454, it is about 3 miles (5km) from Hunstanton, fourteen miles from Kings Lynn, 43 miles from Norwich and about 118 miles (190 kilometres) from London.
