A village and well loved holiday resort having some wonderful beaches, Heacham is found in the county of Norfolk, in between the resort of Hunstanton ("Hunny") and the town and port of King's Lynn. The village has a populace of approximately 4,707 occupants and is possibly most commonly known for its historic associations with the Indian native Pocahontas, who wedded John Rolfe, a tobacco merchant, who came from Heacham. Heacham is also widely known for its fields of lavender, harvested here by the Norfolk Lavender Ltd since they arrived in 1932.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village began to be well liked as a coastal resort in in the mid-nineteenth century, after the arrival of the railway line between King's Lynn and Hunstanton in the early 1860s. That culminated in the Jubilee Bridge being erected in 1887 to replace an ancient wooden bridge. The village is just as well-liked these days as a seaside resort, with both South and North Beaches dotted with caravan parks.

The beach areas here are placed upon the eastern shores of The Wash, therefore it's one of very few beaches on the east coast of England where the sun sets over the sea rather than over the land.

Historical Past of Heacham: It's quite possibly approximately 5 millenia since the initial settlements took place in the area close to Heacham, the unearthing of Neolithic and Bronze Age artifacts, gives evidence of this. Settlement remained in the area through the Iron Age and into the Roman era, however it was perhaps not till the fifth century when the first actual village was established there. The name "Heacham" is possibly derived from the name of a local Norman Lord during the 1300s, called Geoffrey de Hecham, though there is no firm evidence of this. A second thought it was named after the close by River Hitch.

Recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 to be part of the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham at that stage supported 143 households (making it fairly large for the time) and the manor was governed by William of Warenne. Before the Norman Conquest the village was overseen by 2 Saxons, Alnoth and Toki of Walton. It was then under the control of a group of Cluniac Monks, right up until after the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, at which time the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard) became Lord of the Manor.

The eldest remaining structure in the village is the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, built in the Norman style and dates from 1230, a bell in the tower is actually still earlier than this, dating from about 1100, meaning it is one of the most ancient bells still surviving in England. Heacham's village sign and also a tablet in the church record the historic links with the indian princess, Pocahontas who wedded John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in sixteen fourteen. She was only 22 when she passed away three years later, but she produced a son named Tom, who subsequently went back to America. The hall endured for many years but was destroyed by fire in 1941.

In nineteen thirty two Norfolk Lavender Ltd was formed in Heacham with a partnership being created involving local nurseryman Linn Chilvers and local landowner named Francis Dusgate, for the purpose of cultivating and processing of lavender and related products. By 1936 there was destined to be 100 acres being cultivated. Since those early beginnings the venture has evolved significantly, and brand new varieties have been bred. The lavender is these days exported all over the world.
