A seaside village and popular holiday resort with some excellent beaches, Heacham is found in the county of Norfolk, between the town of Hunstanton and the large port and town of Kings Lynn. The village has a resident population of roughly 4,700 people and is perhaps most recognized for its link with the native Indian Pocahontas, who married a tobacco merchant called John Rolfe, who came from Heacham. The village is additionally well regarded for its fields of lavender, grown here by Norfolk Lavender Ltd since they arrived in 1932.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village began to become popular as a sea side resort in the mid-19th century, a result of the building of the railway line between King's Lynn and Hunstanton in the eighteen sixties. This resulted in the Jubilee Bridge being constructed in eighteen eighty seven taking the place of the old timber bridge. The village is still popular today as a tourist resort, with both the North and South Beaches being replete with camping and caravan sites.

The seashores in this area are placed on the east coast of The Wash, this means it is one of only a handful of beaches in the east of England where sunsets are visible over the sea as opposed to over the land.

Historic Past of Heacham: It's quite possibly over five thousand years since the first settlers showed up in the area around Heacham, and the unearthing of Neolithic and Bronze Age relics, show evidence of that. Settlement persisted in the area through the Iron Age and into the times of the Romans, even though it was most likely not till the fifth century when the 1st real village was founded there. The name "Heacham" is perhaps derived from the title of a local Lord during the twelfth century, Geoffrey de Hecham, though there is no strong evidence that this is the truth. One more possibility it was named after the nearby River Hitch.

Reported in the Domesday Book (1086) as being in the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, the village back then supported 143 households (quite sizeable for this times) and the manor came under the control of William of Warenne. At the time of the Norman Conquest of 1066 the neighbourhood was ruled by 2 Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was subsequently controlled by a group of Cluniac Monks, right until after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, at which time the Lord of the Manor was the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard).

The most ancient existing building in Heacham is the St Mary the Virgin Parish Church, built in Norman style and is dated 1230, a bell in the tower is in truth even older, dating from approximately eleven hundred, meaning it is one of the most ancient bells still existing in England. The village sign as well as a tablet in the church recount the historic ties with the indian princess, Pocahontas who wedded John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in 1614. She was only twenty two when she passed away three years later, but she gave birth to a son, Tom, he subsequently returned to America. The hall endured for centuries but was destroyed by fire during the Second World War.

In nineteen thirty two Norfolk Lavender Ltd was established in the village with a partnership being arranged involving local nurseryman named Linn Chilvers and local landowner named Francis Dusgate, with the goal of growing and distilling of lavender and associated merchandise. In 1936 there would be a hundred acres being cultivated. Ever since these beginnings the company has expanded dramatically, and different types have been propagated. The lavender is these days exported all around the globe.
