A coastal village and well loved vacation destination with some excellent beaches, Heacham is located in the county of Norfolk, between the town of Hunstanton ("Hunny") and the town and port of King's Lynn. The village has a resident population of about 5,000 people and is probably most widely known for its connection with the Indian native Pocahontas, who married a tobacco merchant called John Rolfe, who came from Heacham. The village is furthermore widely known for its fields of lavender, nurtured here by the Norfolk Lavender Ltd since they arrived in 1932.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386Heacham began to get popular as a tourist resort in in the mid-nineteenth century, mainly because of the establishing of the railway line between Hunstanton and Kings Lynn in the early eighteen sixties. This culminated in the Jubilee Bridge being constructed in the 1880's to replace an old wood bridge. Heacham continues to be well-liked nowadays as a coastal resort, with both North Beach and South Beach dotted with camping and caravan sites.

The beach areas in this area are placed on the easterly shores of The Wash, as a consequence it is one of few beaches in eastern England where sunsets can be seen over the sea and not over the land.

Heacham's History: It's quite possibly more than 5,000 years since the first settlements appeared in the vicinity around Heacham, the discovery of Bronze Age and Neolithic relics, shows evidence of that. Settlement remained in the area thru the Iron Age and into the Roman period, even though it was perhaps not until the 5th century when the 1st proper village was set up there. The name is possibly taken from the title of a local Lord of the Manor during the 1300s, Geoffrey de Hecham, even though there is not any reliable evidence that this is a fact. A different thought is that the name is taken from the local River Hitch.

Reported in the Domesday Book of 1086 as being part of the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, the village then consisted of one hundred and forty three households (rather large for this period) and the manor was owned by William of Warenne. Up until the Norman Conquest the village was overseen by 2 Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was afterwards governed by Cluniac Monks, until after the Henry the Eighth's Dissolution of the Monasteries, when the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard) became Lord of the Manor.

The earliest remaining structure in the village is the St Mary the Virgin Parish Church, which was built in the Norman style and is dated twelve thirty, one of its bells is in truth still earlier, dating from roughly 1100, one of the oldest bells still surviving in England. The village sign together with a tablet in the church remind visitors of the historic ties with the red indian, Pocahontas who wedded John Rolfe, of Heacham Hall, in Virginia in sixteen fourteen. She was just twenty two when she died three years later, nevertheless she produced a son, Tom, he later went back to America. The hall endured for many years but was destroyed by fire in the early 1940s.

In nineteen thirty two Norfolk Lavender Ltd was set up in the village with a partnership being set up between a local nurseryman named Linn Chilvers and local landowner Francis Dusgate, for the purpose of producing and distilling of lavender and associated products. In 1936 there would be over one hundred acres under cultivation. Since those early beginnings the company has grown dramatically, and fresh types have been produced. The lavender is currently exported all throughout the world.
