A coastal village and popular vacation destination adjacent to some wonderful beaches, Heacham is found in Norfolk, East Anglia, in between the resort of Hunstanton ("Hunny") and the town and port of Kings Lynn. Heacham has a resident population of approximately 4,707 people and is perhaps most commonly known for its links with the Indian native Pocahontas, who married John Rolfe, a tobacco merchant, who originated from Heacham. The village is additionally reputed for its lavender fields, nurtured by Norfolk Lavender Ltd since they arrived in the nineteen thirties.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village started to become well liked as a tourist resort in the nineteenth century, just after the opening of the train line between King's Lynn and Hunstanton in the eighteen sixties. This also led to the Jubilee Bridge being erected in eighteen eighty seven to replace the older timber bridge. The area still is well loved today as a coastal resort, with both the North and South Beach dotted with caravan parks.

The seashores here are positioned upon the east shoreline of The Wash, this means that it's one of the only beaches on the east coast of England where sunsets are visible over the sea rather than over the land.

Heritage of Heacham: It's most likely roughly five thousand yrs since the 1st settlers arrived in the vicinity surrounding Heacham, the uncovering of Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts, gives evidence of that. Habitation continued there throughout the Iron Age and into the times of the Romans, while it was in all likelihood not till the fifth century that the 1st true village was founded there. The name is believed to be taken from the title of a Lord in the 1300s, called Geoffrey de Hecham, even though there isn't any compelling evidence that this is the truth. An additional explanation is, the name was taken from the local River Hitch.

Reported in the Domesday Book (1086) to be included in the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham at that moment consisted of one hundred and forty three households (making it pretty substantial for this times) and the manor was controlled by William of Warenne. At the time of the Norman Conquest the neighbourhood was overseen by a pair of Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was afterwards governed by a group of Cluniac Monks, until after the Henry the Eighth's Dissolution of the Monasteries, at which time the Duke of Norfolk became Lord of the Manor.

The eldest remaining structure in the village is the Saint Mary the Virgin Church, which was built in the Norman style and was completed in 1230, a bell in the tower is believe it or not even earlier, dating from around eleven hundred, one of the most ancient bells still in existence in England. The village sign and a tablet inside the church outline the famous ties with Pocahontas, the indian princess who married John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in sixteen fourteen. She was just twenty two when she passed away 3 years later, but she gave birth to a son, Tom, he subsequently went back to America. Heacham Hall endured for many years but was destroyed by fire in nineteen forty one.

In the early 1930's Norfolk Lavender Ltd was set up in Heacham with a partnership being created involving nurseryman Linn Chilvers and a landowner Francis Dusgate, for the purpose of harvesting and distilling of lavender and related products. A few years later there were a hundred acres covered in lavender plants. Since those early times the business has expanded greatly, and different types have been raised. Lavender is now exported all throughout the world.
