A coastal village and popular vacation destination having some superb beaches, Heacham is situated in the county of Norfolk, in between the resort of Hunstanton and the large port and town of Kings Lynn. Heacham has a population of approximately five thousand people and is probably most recognized for its historic connections with the Indian Pocahontas, who married a tobacco grower called John Rolfe, who originated in Heacham. The village is also well known for its lavender fields, harvested by Norfolk Lavender Ltd ever since they arrived in nineteen thirty two.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village began to become known as a tourist resort in in the mid-nineteenth century, mainly because of the building of the railway line between Hunstanton and King's Lynn in the 1860s. This resulted in the Jubilee Bridge being built in the 1880's taking the place of the obsolete wood bridge. The area continues to be popular today as a holiday resort, with both the North Beach and South Beach being dotted with caravan parks.

The beaches at Heacham are found on the eastern shores of The Wash, this means that it is one of very few beaches in the east of England where the sun sets over the sea and not over the land.

Heacham's Historic Past: It's likely around five millenia since the initial human settlers turned up in the region around Heacham, and the uncovering of Bronze Age and Neolithic relics, gives evidence of this fact. Habitation continued in the area thru the Iron Age and into Roman times, though it was in all probability not until the fifth century that the first actual village was founded there. The name is said to be taken from the name of a Lord of the Manor in the twelfth century, called Geoffrey de Hecham, however there is not any reliable evidence that this is a fact. A further theory is that the name comes from the nearby River Hitch.

Documented in the Domesday Book of 1086 to be part of the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham at this stage comprised one hundred and forty three households (pretty sizeable for the time) and the manor was controlled by William of Warenne. Prior to the Norman Conquest this area was controlled by a pair of Saxons, Alnoth and Toki of Walton. It was then controlled by Cluniac Monks, right until after the Henry the Eighth's Dissolution of the Monasteries, at which time the Lord of the Manor was the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard).

The most ancient surviving building in the village is the St Mary the Virgin Church, which is built in the Norman style and was built in 1230, one of its bells is in truth still older than the church itself, dating from around eleven hundred, meaning it is one of the earliest bells still existing in England. The village sign along with a tablet in the church tell of the famous links with Pocahontas, the red indian who married John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in sixteen fourteen. Pocahontas (Rebecca) was only 22 when she passed away 3 years later, nonetheless she left behind a son, Tom, who later returned to America. Heacham Hall endured for many years but was eventually destroyed by fire during the Second World War.

In the early 1930's Norfolk Lavender Ltd was established in Heacham with a partnership being set up between local nurseryman called Linn Chilvers and a landowner named Francis Dusgate, to develop the harvesting and processing of lavender and associated merchandise. By 1936 there was destined to be a hundred acres covered in lavender plants. Ever since those early days the company has evolved dramatically, and fresh new types have been bred. The lavender is these days sold all around the globe.

The village can be accessed by means of the A149 or the B1454, it is about 5km (3 miles) from Hunstanton, fourteen miles from Kings Lynn, 69km (43 miles) from Norwich and about 190 kilometres (118 miles) from London.
