A coastal village and well known vacation resort alongside some fantastic beaches, Heacham is situated in Norfolk, East Anglia, between the holiday resort of Hunstanton and the port and town of Kings Lynn. Heacham has a resident population of roughly 4,700 inhabitants and is possibly most widely known for its historic ties with the Indian Pocahontas, who wedded John Rolfe, a tobacco grower, who originated from Heacham. The area is furthermore widely known for its fields of lavender, cultivated here by Norfolk Lavender Ltd since they arrived in 1932.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village began to be fashionable as a holiday resort in Victorian times, after the coming of the railway line between Kings Lynn and Hunstanton at the beginning of the eighteen sixties. This culminated in the building of the Jubilee Bridge in 1887 in order to replace the outmoded wood bridge. The village still is well loved today as a seaside resort, with both South Beach and North Beach being peppered with camping and caravan sites.

The shorelines here are placed upon the eastern coast of The Wash, as a consequence it is one of very few beaches in the east of England where the sun sets over the sea rather than over the land.

A History of Heacham Norfolk: It's very likely over 5,000 yrs since the first human settlers emerged in the region near Heacham, and the unearthing of Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts, show evidence of that. Habitation continued there throughout the Iron Age and into Roman times, whilst it was almost certainly not until the 5th century that the first proper village was established there. The name is considered to be derived from the name of a Lord of the Manor during the 12th century, Geoffrey de Hecham, although there is no compelling evidence of this. Another thought it was named after the close by River Hitch.

Documented in the Domesday Book as being within the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham at that point in time incorporated 143 households (making it fairly big for the period) and the manor came under the control of William of Warenne. At the time of the 1066 Norman Conquest Heacham was controlled by 2 Saxons, Alnoth and Toki of Walton. It was later controlled by a group of Cluniac Monks, right until following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, at which time the Lord of the Manor was the Duke of Norfolk.

The earliest surviving structure in Heacham is the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is built in the Norman style and was built in twelve thirty, one of its bells is believe it or not even earlier than this, dating from approximately 1100, meaning it is one of the most ancient bells still in existence in England. Heacham's village sign as well as a tablet in the church remind visitors of the famous links with Pocahontas, the red indian who married John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in sixteen fourteen. Pocahontas (Rebecca) was just 22 when she passed away three years later, but she produced a son, Tom, who later went back to America. Heacham Hall endured for many years but was destroyed by fire in the 1940s.

In the early 1930's Norfolk Lavender Ltd was established in Heacham with a partnership being set up involving local nurseryman named Linn Chilvers and a landowner named Francis Dusgate, for the purpose of cultivating and distilling of lavender and associated merchandise. A few years later there were 100 acres being cultivated. Since those early years the enterprise has expanded considerably, and fresh varieties have been raised. The lavender is nowadays exported all around the world.

The village can be entered by means of the A149 and the B1454, it is about 3 miles from Hunstanton, 14 miles (22 kilometres) from Kings Lynn, 69 kilometres (43 miles) from Norwich and about 118 miles (190 kilometres) from London.
