A coastal village and well known holiday resort boasting some excellent beaches, Heacham can be found in the county of Norfolk, between the holiday resort of Hunstanton ("Hunny") and the port and town of Kings Lynn. Heacham has a population of roughly five thousand inhabitants and is perhaps most recognized for its ties with the Indian native Pocahontas, who married John Rolfe, a tobacco grower, who came from Heacham. The area is additionally reputed for its fields of lavender, cultivated by the Norfolk Lavender Ltd ever since they came to the area in the nineteen thirties.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386Heacham began to get popular as a beach resort in in the mid-nineteenth century, immediately after the building of the train line between Hunstanton and King's Lynn in the early eighteen sixties. This culminated in the construction of the Jubilee Bridge in 1887 taking the place of the ancient wood bridge. Heacham still is well-liked today as a seaside resort, with both South Beach and North Beach being dotted with camping and caravan parks.

The shorelines at this point are placed on the eastern shores of The Wash, therefore it's one of the only beaches on the east coast of England where sunsets are visible over the sea instead of over the land.

The Story of Heacham Norfolk: It's certainly around five millenia since the initial settlers emerged in the area close to Heacham, the finding of Bronze Age and Neolithic artifacts, show evidence of this fact. Human settlement remained there all through the Iron Age and into the Roman era, even though it was most likely not until the 5th century when the 1st proper village was established there. The name "Heacham" is said to be taken from the title of a local Lord in the 12th century, called Geoffrey de Hecham, although there is not any solid evidence that this is true. One additional theory it was named after the nearby River Hitch.

Recognized in the Domesday Book of 1086 to be included in the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, the village at that time supported one hundred and forty three households (quite sizeable for this time) and the manor was controlled by William of Warenne. Before the Norman Conquest this area was overseen by a couple of Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was subsequently under the control of Cluniac Monks, until after the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, when the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard) became Lord of the Manor.

The most ancient remaining building in the village is the St Mary the Virgin Parish Church, which was built in the Norman style and was built in twelve thirty, a bell in the tower is believe it or not still older than the church itself, dating from roughly 1100, one of the most ancient bells still existing in England. The village sign as well as a tablet within the church remind the villagers of the historic links with Pocahontas, the red indian who married John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in 1614. She was just twenty two when she died 3 years later, though she provided John with a son, Tom, he eventually returned to America. The hall endured for centuries but was eventually destroyed by fire in nineteen forty one.

In the early 1930's Norfolk Lavender Ltd was founded in the village with a partnership being arranged between nurseryman Linn Chilvers and local landowner Francis Dusgate, for the purpose of harvesting and distilling of lavender and associated products. By 1936 there would be over 100 acres under cultivation. Ever since then the company has grown greatly, and newer varieties have been raised. The lavender is currently sold all throughout the world.
