A coastal village and popular vacation destination next to some excellent beaches, Heacham is set in Norfolk, East Anglia, between the town of Hunstanton ("Hunny") and the large port and town of King's Lynn. Heacham has a populace of approximately 4,700 people and is probably most commonly known for its ties with the native Indian Pocahontas, who married a tobacco grower called John Rolfe, who originated from Heacham. The village is additionally known for its fields of lavender, grown here by Norfolk Lavender Ltd since they came to the village in nineteen thirty two.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village began to become fashionable as a holiday resort in the 19th century, due to the arrival of the train line between Kings Lynn and Hunstanton in the early eighteen sixties. This also led to the erection of the Jubilee Bridge in 1887 to take the place of an ancient wood bridge. The area remains popular today as a seaside resort, with both North and South Beaches being lined with camping and caravan sites.

The beaches at this point are found upon the easterly coast of The Wash, which means it's one of only a handful of beaches on the east coast of England where sunsets are visible over the sea as opposed to over the land.

Heacham's Historic Past: It is more than likely roughly 5 millenia since the earliest settlers emerged in the vicinity near Heacham, and the discovery of Neolithic and Bronze Age artifacts, show evidence of this fact. Human settlement persisted in the area through the Iron Age and into Roman times, however it was possibly not until the 5th century that the first true village was established there. The name is said to be derived from the title of a local Norman Lord in the 1300s, called Geoffrey de Hecham, however there is no compelling evidence that this is a fact. The other explanation it was named after the local River Hitch.

Listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 to be within the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, the village during those times comprised 143 households (making it quite big for this time) and the manor was controlled by William of Warenne. Before the Norman Conquest (1066) the area was ruled by a couple of Saxons, Alnoth and Toki of Walton. It was subsequently under the control of a group of Cluniac Monks, right up until following the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, at which time the Duke of Norfolk became Lord of the Manor.

The oldest surviving structure in Heacham is the Saint Mary the Virgin Church, which is built in Norman style and dates from 1230, one of its bells is believe it or not even earlier, dating from about 1100, making it one of the most ancient bells still existing in England. Heacham's village sign along with a tablet inside the church remind visitors of the famous ties with Pocahontas, the red indian who wedded John Rolfe, of Heacham Hall, in Virginia in 1614. Pocahontas was just twenty two when she passed away 3 years later, however she left behind a son named Tom, who later on returned to America. The hall endured for many years but was ultimately destroyed by fire during the Second World War.

In nineteen thirty two Norfolk Lavender Ltd was set up in the village with a partnership being set up between a local nurseryman Linn Chilvers and a landowner Francis Dusgate, to develop the harvesting and processing of lavender and related merchandise. By 1936 there were a hundred acres under cultivation. Since those early beginnings the company has evolved dramatically, and unique varieties have been raised. Lavender is nowadays exported all around the globe.

The village can be accessed by means of the A149 and the B1454, it is around 5km (3 miles) from Hunstanton, fourteen miles (22km) from King's Lynn, 43 miles (69 kilometres) from Norwich and about 118 miles (190km) from London.
