A village and well loved vacation resort with some superb beaches, Heacham can be found in the county of Norfolk, between the resort of Hunstanton ("Hunny") and the large town and port of Kings Lynn. Heacham has a population of about 4,700 people and is possibly most recognized for its links with the Indian Pocahontas, who wedded a tobacco merchant called John Rolfe, who came from Heacham. The area is also known for its lavender fields, harvested by the Norfolk Lavender Ltd since they came to the village in 1932.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386The village started to be well liked as a coastal resort in the nineteenth century, a result of the building of the train line between Kings Lynn and Hunstanton in the 1860s. That also led to the construction of the Jubilee Bridge in 1887 taking the place of the ancient timber bridge. The area continues to be well loved today as a tourist resort, with both the North Beach and South Beach dotted with camping and caravan parks.

The beaches here are situated upon the eastern shores of The Wash, which means it is one of the few beaches in eastern England where the sun sets over the sea instead of over the land.

A History of Heacham: It is probably more than five millenia since the initial human settlements occurred in the area near Heacham, the finding of Bronze Age and Neolithic artefacts, show evidence of this. Human settlement persisted there all through the Iron Age and into the Roman period, whilst it was more than likely not till the 5th century that the first actual village was established there. The name of the village is perhaps derived from the title of a local Lord in the 1300s, Geoffrey de Hecham, however there is not any reliable evidence that this is the truth. A second idea it was named after the local River Hitch.

Described in the Domesday Book to be within the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham in those days supported one hundred and forty three households (rather substantial for the times) and the manor came under the control of William of Warenne. Up until the Norman Conquest (1066) Heacham was overseen by a pair of Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was later governed by a group of Cluniac Monks, right until following the Henry the Eighth's Dissolution of the Monasteries, at which time the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard) became Lord of the Manor.

The most ancient surviving building in Heacham is the St Mary the Virgin Church, built in the Norman style and was completed in twelve thirty, one of its bells is believe it or not still earlier than the church itself, dating from approximately eleven hundred, one of the most ancient bells still in existence in England. The village sign together with a tablet inside the church tell of the famous links with Pocahontas, the red indian princess who married John Rolfe, of Heacham Hall, in Virginia in 1614. Pocahontas (Rebecca) was just 22 when she died three years later, nonetheless she produced a son called Tom, he subsequently returned to America. The hall survived for many years but was destroyed by fire in 1941.

In the early 1930's Norfolk Lavender Ltd was founded in Heacham with a partnership being set up between local nurseryman Linn Chilvers and local landowner Francis Dusgate, with the intention of growing and distilling of lavender and related products. A few years later there were 100 acres under cultivation. Since these beginnings the enterprise has expanded significantly, and different varieties have been propagated. Lavender is today sold all over the world.

The village can be accessed by way of the A149 and the B1454, it is about 3 miles (5km) from Hunstanton, fourteen miles from Kings Lynn, 69 kilometres (43 miles) from Norwich and about 190 kilometres (118 miles) from London.
