A village and well known holiday resort boasting some fine beaches, Heacham is found in the county of Norfolk, between the holiday resort of Hunstanton and the port and town of King's Lynn. The village has a resident population of approximately four thousand seven hundred people and is possibly most commonly known for its links with the native Indian Pocahontas, who married a tobacco grower called John Rolfe, who originated from Heacham. Heacham is additionally well known for its fields of lavender, harvested by Norfolk Lavender Ltd ever since they arrived in 1932.

St Mary, Heacham, Norfolk - geograph.org.uk - 310386Heacham began to be popular as a seaside resort in Victorian times, because of the opening of the railway line between Kings Lynn and Hunstanton at the start of the eighteen sixties. That resulted in the building of the Jubilee Bridge in the eighteen eighties to take the place of an old timber bridge. Heacham is still favoured today as a beach resort, with both North and South Beach being dotted with camping and caravan sites.

The shorelines here are positioned upon the east shoreline of The Wash, meaning it's one of few beaches in eastern England where sunsets can be seen over the sea rather than over the land.

Heacham's Historic Past: It's most certainly more than 5,000 years since the initial settlements appeared in the vicinity close to Heacham, and the unearthing of Neolithic and Bronze Age relics, show evidence of that. Human settlement remained in the area throughout the Iron Age and into Roman times, whilst it was likely not until the 5th century when the earliest real village was founded there. The name is perhaps taken from the name of a local Lord of the Manor in the 1300s, called Geoffrey de Hecham, however there isn't any compelling evidence that this is a fact. Yet another idea is, the name originates from the local River Hitch.

Registered in the Domesday Book to be in the Smethdun (Smithdon) hundred, Heacham during that time included 143 households (making it pretty big for the times) and the manor was controlled by William of Warenne. Before the Norman Conquest (1066) the region was overseen by a pair of Saxons, Toki of Walton and Alnoth. It was afterwards governed by Cluniac Monks, right until after the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, when the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard) became Lord of the Manor.

The eldest remaining structure in Heacham is the Saint Mary the Virgin Parish Church, which was built in the Norman style and dates from 1230, one of its bells is believe it or not still earlier than this, dating from around 1100, making it one of the earliest bells still surviving in England. Heacham's village sign in addition to a tablet in the church recount the historic ties with the red indian princess, Pocahontas who wedded John Rolfe, from Heacham Hall, in Virginia in sixteen fourteen. She was just twenty two when she passed away three years later, still she produced a son named Tom, who subsequently went back to America. The hall endured for many years but was eventually destroyed by fire during the Second World War.

In nineteen thirty two Norfolk Lavender Ltd was set up in the village with a partnership being set up involving nurseryman Linn Chilvers and a landowner Francis Dusgate, for the purpose of growing and processing of lavender and related products. A few years later there would be 100 acres covered in lavender plants. Ever since these beginnings the business has grown enormously, and brand new types have been bred. The lavender is currently sold all around the globe.

The village can be accessed by way of the A149 and the B1454, it is about three miles from Hunstanton, 14 miles (22 kilometres) from King's Lynn, 43 miles (69km) from Norwich and about 118 miles from London.
